New Years Resolutions

Do you make New Year Resolutions? If so, what about? Losing weight. saving money.

I work at Starbucks and January is our slowest month of the year, probably because of a new years resolution to save money and lose weight.

Do you make resolutions about parenting? Being a better Listener? Being more consistent?

My blog about “loving to get high” generally focuses on your son or daughter. But a New Years Celebration is actually a good opportunity to evaluate your own history of “loving to get high”, if that even exists. Take an honest look at your own celebrations. College? Work parties? Family gatherings?

Wonder and Excitement

A child’s world is fresh and new and beautiful, full of wonder and excitement.  It is our misfortune that for most of us that clear-eyed vision, that true instinct for what is beautiful and awe-inspiring, is dimmed and even lost before we reach adulthood.  ~Rachel Carson

The idea that we lose our capacity for wonder and excitement by the time our eyes dim in adulthood is a sad tragedy. It doesn’t need to be that way.

As a parent, we need to become curious about our teenagers life.

A 4-H Project made with Hemp

It’s “Show and Tell” for drug education.

When I was a 12 year old I put Hemp in a 4-H project, entitled “Weeds”. Hemp was one of five weeds, along with;  knotweed, motherwort, nightshade and rough clinquefoil.

I bring my “Weed” project along when I speak to students and I ask them how much trouble do they think that I got into for putting hemp in a 4-H project? they say, “A lot”. The truth is I didn’t get into any trouble it was simply a weed. Times have changed. Now students would get suspended from school, sent for a drug evaluation, or at least gotten a lecture from an Assistant Principal.

Holiday Tears,

With tears in her eyes, a mom shared this with me, “We went to Grandma’s for Thanksgiving, as we do every year, but this time it was ruined. Our son stole money from his favorite  Grandma. How could he stoop so low?”

Even though the conversation with this mom took place more than 33 years ago, I still remember the the sadness and disappointment on her  face. For this mom to realize that her son loved to get high more than he loved his Grandma was just about too much too take.

Prop. 19: the Legalizion of Pot, Why?

On Wednesday Evening, November 3rd, Jimmy Kimmel joked about thousands of Hippies in California, coming out that morning to vote for Prop. 19, too bad the Election was the day before. Making jokes at the expense of pot smoking Hippies? Actually it was a great poke at a group of people invested in smoking and legalizing pot.

So what is behind the legalization of pot? Tax Revenue? To stop dealers and the Mexican Cartel? Pot is safer than Alcohol? Defending Religious Freedom?

How about this explanation? Loving to Get High.
